Perl is a widespread scripting language that's considered to be one of the most practical languages in the online world. It is feature-rich and it is used to generate a number of web-based applications and CGI scripts. What distinguishes Perl from most of the alternative languages on the web is the compatibility with modules - groups of commands for a specific job which can be integrated into a script by calling them i.e. you are able to write only one line in your script to get an entire module executed, rather than having the entire code that's already a part of the module anyway. Because Perl supports numerous other languages and it comes with a lot of functions depending on what a particular app can do, it's employed by many well-known companies - the BBC, Craigslist, The Internet Movie Database (IMDB), cPanel, etc.
